Job description

Creates, develops and adapts design concepts based on input from customers and engineers using advanced design tools and techniques. Produce accurate working 2D drawings and 3D models, which include details, assemblies, layout drawings and stack – ups, from verbal or written instructions, using 3D modeling. Support the CAD based design of new or existing products through the skilled use of CAD languages such as SolidWorks, CATIA, IDEAS, Unigraphics and Pro – Engineer (CREO). Support the CAE needs by providing technical direction as well as conducting simulation and assisting in the development of components or systems. Establish and administer CAE user groups to share tips, techniques, problem solutions, and upcoming conferences and events. Must be able to demonstrate a high degree of creativity and understanding of manufacturing processes and tolerances. Demonstrates characteristics that foster team progress, the initiative to take on a challenging assignment and creates opportunity where none exists. Provides knowledge and guidance to less experienced Design EngineersKEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

o Performs the mechanical design function of new product design and serves as a mentor to the Design Engineering associates in the areas of technical knowledge and capabilities.

o CAD knowledge and rapid use of CAD tools in generation of design and detail Drawings/models including generation of solid models.

o Designs Fan Drive components and assemblies by following established Design Engineering standards as required. Works through engineering challenges using tools such as CAD layouts, stack – ups, kinematic programs, as well as various internal applications and techniques to perform basic analyses of new designs. Proficient in solid modeling, surfacing, manipulating complex assemblies, and creating and modifying associated drawings.

o Produces clear designs using accepted drafting standards and conventions

o Knowledge of product mechanics for hydraulic, mechanical, magnetic and electromechanical products and systems as appropriate.

o Material selection, standards and use knowledge

o Use of industry accepted FEM/FEA standards and practices & new analysis technologies are assigned

o Special assignments – responsible for support and completion of special assignments

o Technical interface with customers for activities that include CAE tools, techniques, and capabilities. This would include professional representation of BorgWarner in all arenas of possible CAE activity.

o Demonstrates knowledge and responsibility for the performance of the quality system and standards.

o Checking of drawings prepared by other engineers and maintain FTR (First Time Right) as per the target.


o Bachelor s Degree in Mechanical / Production / Automotive Engineering

o 7 – 9 years of experience mechanical design, 3 – D modeling, and drawing releases, Experienced in CAD tools (such as Solidworks, Creo, UG, Catia)

o Experience in CAE preferred

o Must have strong technical math skills, especially trigonometry and descriptive geometry.

o Proficient with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

o 4000 hours SolidWorks experience (preferred) or an equivalent 3D solids package (Creo, UG, Catia, etc.)

o Knowledge of fundamentals of internal combustion engines including experience in engine or automotive component design.

o Good working knowledge of product development environment and practice

o Casting design experience or equivalent manufacturing design experience is strongly preferred. Understanding of the relationship between casting and machining of various components.

o Be familiar with current tooling, pattern making and casting practices as related to sand, permanent mold and investment casting design requirements.

o Understand the cost drivers associated with various materials, design features, and manufacturing processes.

o Strong foundation in analytical skills based in broad engineering disciplines

o Familiar with manufacturing methods (tooling), especially iron casting technology

o Familiar with international standards (materials, etc.)

o Good communication skill in English (written and spoken)
