About the job
Qualifications
Engineering degree with a good academic record; post graduate degree with a specialization in operations is a plus
2+ years of experience in product design or product cost optimization or part development in engineering design (R&D) or strategic sourcing/purchasing or supplier development functions
Deep understanding in software development of safety critical systems complying to ISO 26262 and non-safety critical systems
Experience in building the overall software architecture, control logic, selection of components and integration of motor, control, vehicle control and battery control
Knowledge of testing and validation protocols and cost optimization of end-to-end software value chain
Knowledge of latest industry trends / innovations from value enhancement and cost improvement perspective
Knowledge / experience on software costing along with generating meaningful insights from optimization exercises
Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to disaggregate issues, identify root causes and recommend solutions
Excellent analytical skills and ability to understand the relevant analysis required to prove a hypothesis and ability to gather information around it and make informed/logical assumptions where required
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, interact effectively with members from all levels and client organizations
Excellent written and verbal business communication skills in English
Flexibility, patience and an understanding of fluid, demanding, and unstructured environments, where priorities evolve constantly and methodologies are regularly challenged
Exhibit self-motivation and highly service-orientated work ethic
What You’ll Do

You will spend ~60-80 % of your time working onsite as part of consulting teams helping solve complex client problems in product development domain.

In this role, you will also work on new product development areas, reducing new product development time, rationalizing cost and quality attributes, carrying out surveys to understand improvement aspects of the organization to support an efficient and effective product development, thereof building a sustainable R&D organization for our clients.

This work includes and is not limited to rationalizing product design based on competitive teardown analysis and customer insights, helping client teams estimate product should cost based on zero base costing and hence design an optimized cost product. You will spend the remainder of your time on developing cutting edge knowledge related to the Product Development (PD) domain and in delivering specialized remote services to clients.

You will focus on product development and design primarily in the Advanced Industries (Automotive/Auto-ancillary) space, bringing together your experience and expertise on topics such as software architecture optimization, end to end control logic programming with emphasis on cost optimization, identifying cost reduction opportunities at a system/vehicle level, develop zero base cost models, propose modular solutions among others. You will also be expected to work on the software value chain to deliver end to end solutions for our clients.

You will also support development and maintenance of various practice knowledge initiatives by way of building McKinsey’s knowledge on product development related topics. This is a cross- geography, cross-industry role and would work well for those who truly envision themselves growing into subject matter experts within the product development domain. This role entails extensive travel within and outside India to bring distinctive impact to our clients across the globe.

There is flexibility to hire at Knowledge Analyst or Senior Knowledge Analyst level, depending on your overall experience.

Who You’ll Work With

You will be based in our Chennai or Gurugram office, as part of our Product Development Center of Competence (PD CoC), a group of expert consultants with domain expertise in topics related to product development. The team supports on several dimensions of PDP topics, like product development diagnostics for assessment of improvement opportunity, Margin transformation support through product redesign and implementation of relevant solutions & frameworks.

The Centre of Competence (CoC) enables McKinsey’s global Product Development practice to deliver distinctive expertise, proprietary methodologies and diagnostics with greater scale and speed with higher quality and consistency. Currently, PD CoC has teams based in India, Taipei, and Munich and design labs in Asia. The Design Labs are an integral part of a network of 9 global DtV Labs and experts.
